Monica’s Gang - Turma da Monica

Tuesday, 10 de April de 2007.

This is the first mainstream Brazilian produced cartoon, in the 70’s. Monica Bunch is a very popular comic strip among Brazilian children and there are tons and tons of merchandising of them. This episode is a Christmas story and was repeatedly broadcast on TV in 1976. Monica is a very strong girl and she uses her bunny rabbit to hit her friends when they misbehave. Unfortunately there is no English version of this one.

Dastardly and Muttley in their Flying Machines

Sunday, 11 de March de 2007.

Also known as Stop the Pigeon, this cartoon was produced from 1969 to 1971, and it’s the first solo cartoon of Dick Dastardly and Muttley, who became famous in Wacky Races. As The Perils of Penelope Pitstop, this cartoon uses several of Belle Époque’s scenery and motifs.

The Brazilian opening titles.

And a fun clip of the original “Stop that pigeon” song over the anime Last Exile:

Star Blazers - Space Battleship Yamato - Episode 1

Friday, 9 de March de 2007.

This anime was all the rages in Brazil when it made its première in 1983. As it was broadcast by a new TV station at the time, all the children gathered to watch it in the houses where the signal of Manchete TV was available, as there was no cable broadcasters by them. I personally loved this anime and was lucky enough to receive the transmission in my home, so I didn’t miss a single episode. The first series, the fight against the evil empire of Iscandar and the radiation which was about to destroy the Earth if the Yamato (in the Brazilian and Greek versions, the Argo) didn’t return to earth in 365 days lasted for 26 anxiously waited episodes, heh. More details about the series on the Wikipedia.

The opening titles bellow is the very rare first intro from the japanese original. In Japanese, subbed in English.

And this was the English opening titles we also saw in Brazil:

Star Blazers intro (english)

The lyrics:

We’re off to outer space
We’re leaving Mother Earth
To save the human race
Our Star Blazers

Searching for a distant star
Heading off to Iscandar
Leaving all we love behind
Who knows what danger we’ll find?

We must be strong and brave
Our home we’ve got to save
If we don’t in just one year
Mother Earth will disappear

Fighting with the Gamilons
We won’t stop until we’ve won
Then we’ll return and when we arrive
The Earth will survive
With our Star Blazers

More Yamato to come, stay tuned.
